Otara Foundation organised an event, titled Animal Defenders, to educate future generations on the importance of treating animals (both wild and domestic) with compassion and kindness. Part of the event was based on an art competition held a few weeks earlier, in which kids in the 5 – 10 year age category and the 11-16 year age category were asked to send in drawings on their views and thoughts of the Dehiwela zoo and animals in captivity. Several activities were planned for the day including a puppet show, an interactive discussion, and an art workshop. Nearly 180 children participated from many parts of Sri Lanka and nine winners were chosen from the art competition and awarded prizes. The event was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm on the 10th of September, 2016.
